About the Festival

Categories

Inspiring adventure films, thoughtful documentaries, fictional dramas full of emotion or comedy…or both. We are looking for short films across a variety of genres. At time of registration, you’ll have a chance to enter your film in the following categories:

  • Short Adventure Film
  • Short Documentary
  • Short Narrative
  • Short Animated/Music Video/Experimental

As we embrace submissions from around the country and around the world, we are also encouraging our Appalachian neighbors to make a great show at the festival. This we we are introducing the following award categories:

  • Short Adventure Film – Appalachia Filmmaker
  • Short Documentary – Appalachia Filmmaker
  • Short Narrative – Appalachia Filmmaker
  • Short Animated/Music Video/Experimental – Appalachia Filmmaker

Appalachia Filmmakers can also be considered for the general award categories. For instance, there is no need to enter your film in both the Documentary & Documentary – Appalachia Filmmaker categories. Simply entering your film Documentary – Appalachia filmmaker will allow your film to be considered for both categories.

TO QUALIFY AS AN APPALACHIA FILMMAKER you must be a native or current resident of the region, or you must have produced the film largely in Appalachia (as is defined by the Appalachian Regional Commissionhttp://www.arc.gov/counties) The Appalachian region spans 13 states, but only the state of West Virginia is included in its entirety. Therefore, we have included the list of all Appalachia counties below. In order to qualify for the Appalachia Filmmaker awards you must be a native or current resident, or produced your film primarily in one of the counties listed below.

All films must have rights to the music used, or be original music.  No commercials please! Films must be under 20 minutes or they will not be considered.
